Many people think that the oneness among the believers in Christ is simply agreeing with a certain set of doctrines, or good people being united together for a common cause, or maybe they are one because they read the same Book, the Bible.
Even among the believers, the oneness of the Body of Christ is being considered as being the unity among the believers, something that… no one can explain, but somehow is there. So what is the Oneness of the Body of Christ? I enjoyed the verses in John 17, vv. 21 and 22, where the Lord Jesus speaks of the oneness among the believers,
That they may be one; even as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be in Us; that the world may believe that You have sent Me. And the glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, even as we are one.
The genuine oneness of the Body of Christ is actually the processed Triune God who mingles Himself with us, the redeemed and transformed Christians. Actually, the oneness of the Body of Christ is simply the Triune God Himself – who has been processed and consummated! From this verse we see that the Father is one with the Son by being IN THE SON, and the Son is one with the Father by being IN THE FATHER. And the way for us, the believers, to be one, is to be IN THE TRIUNE GOD!
Well, the Triune God has been processed and consummated and is now the Spirit mingling Himself with our spirit and advancing to mingle Himself with our entire tripartite being! As the Triune God mingles Himself with us, we become the Body of Christ. Thus, the Body of Christ itself is the oneness, and our oneness is the oneness of the organic Body of Christ!
This is “organic”, in the way of life – we were regenerated with the divine life, and since we were born again, there’s a process of mingling going on: the Triune God is mingling Himself with us more and more every day! This mingling is actually the Body of Christ, in which the divine element is mingling with the human element.
The Body of Christ is actually the oneness – and the Body of Christ is simply the mingling of God and man. Also, as we see in this portion of the Word, the oneness of the Body is nothing else but “the enlargement of the oneness of the Triune God”. It’s not that the Triune God is one, and we are “learning from Him” or “following their pattern” – NO! The way we are one is by being IN THE TRIUNE GOD, and by being in the enlarged oneness of the Triune God!
The Lord Jesus desired for us, His believers, to be in the Triune God – and in this way we are one! Yes, the oneness of the Triune God is the “model” for the oneness in the Body, but it is also the oneness in which all the believers are being brought into. We have no oneness in ourselves, and even if we try, oneness will never exist among human beings – apart from being in the mingling of God and man!
Man in his nature is not one – man is divisive and independent; but man in his mingled spirit is one with all the other believers! Our oneness in the Body of Christ is altogether wrapped up with the Triune God – it is the enlarged oneness of the Triune God in which we are also included by being mingled with the Triune God!
This is the desire of God’s heart – to mingle Himself with man, to make Himself one with man, and to make man one with Him! In this union with man, God is also mingled with man, and man is mingled with God. When the processed and consummated Triune God is mingled with the tripartite man, man is being brought into the oneness of the Triune God.
The main attribute of the Triune God is oneness – all He does is in the principle of oneness. Hence, our oneness is just the oneness of the Triune God being enlarged and including us in His divine oneness. Lord, gain what Your heart’s desire today with us! Mingle Yourself more with us today! Lord, more divinity mingled with our humanity today! May we allow You to mingle Yourself more with us today and bring us into Yourself! Lord, bring our whole being into the Triune God! Bring all the saints into this enlarged oneness! Lord, perfect us into one. Make us all one with You and bring us into the oneness of the Triune God! We cannot be one apart from You, Lord – bring us more into the Triune God in our whole being and our living! May we have our being and our living in the enlarged oneness of the Triune God!
