being a Christian student on the campus – being grouped together with the students is vital!

December 4, 2011 by Christian Student 3 Comments

being a Christian student on the campus - being grouped together with the students is vital! [picture: City University, London, UK]Do I believe in God? Yes, I still do. Do I believe God exists in every discipline or department of the University? No, I still don’t. As far as I can remember in Matt. 4:9-10, Jesus turned down the offer to be the CEO of the world corporation/world system, so He is certainly not the Chief Operation Officer over at the world economic systems and world political systems… Also, I’m sure that God isn’t involved in founding the business schools in the university.

It is with this mind that I have been through the business school – in fact, along with the general philosophy of the “What is University for?” I struggled all the way throughout my education history; never have I found God in education.

BUT, I do believe in God: I still believe God is my God, He is the one who created the universe, the heaven, and the earth, and He put the spirit within man. YET, I cannot see any link between God and education whatsoever, even with the help from the serving saints and from the Scriptures.

Whenever I spend time in my mind, in my education, and in my university, to me is this like a means to find one’s own capacity, and the end is to utilize such capacity to benefit the society – since the university is indeed a fundamental structure of the society as such. But whenever I spend time in my spirit, although there’s no link between the university and my spirit, I am still able to sense the enjoyment and peace of being in my spirit.

There are many terms in church life such as “the world system”, “knowledge”, “philosophy”, “culture”, etc; but who really understands these terms as what they really ARE instead of what they ARE NOT? The education I had in university gave me an introduction to how “the world system” actually works, and I may not describe it as “intriguing” – it is certainly “appealing”. However, as the hymn says, I still remember that “Everything is sure to pass away, Everyone is going their own way“.

One day I’ll have to face the Lord’s coming back, and all my life will be judged by Him item by item… I don’t know what things will count before Him, but one thing I remember and is that the saints really encouraged me; they are my true family (indeed, I grew up among the saints). As long as they are around, I feel I am not completely lost. Many times when I sense no feeling of going to the meetings, yet I would still go, just to be there, the Lord worked something out in His own way. It’s so funny that saints normally use the phrase “church kids” in the sense of, “grow up, kids!” Honestly, if I did not have the deposit of “growing up as a church kid”, or if I had never heard terms such as “the Lord’s return” or “God’s eternal economy“, I would have been lost by now.

Whether we admit this or not, the church life can be very “easily recognized” today, particularly when it comes to the work with the young people. The new generation in the university today has a strong distinguishable characteristic of “being grouped together”, and this matter is being strongly practiced and emphasized as years pass by. It’s a good thing – so make sure you are “grouped” with your spiritual friends, call each other to make sure no one is left out!

And if you think you’re left out – well, go back in! Believe me, the grouping effect can be a “difficult thing” to achieve if you are not in it! I remember one advice I gave a business school fresher: “Don’t leave your Poland camp group, because the day your peers stop calling or texting you, that day you’ll stop your church life completely! Make sure they remember you!”

I still remember a dialogue with a well-performing student; I asked: “do you still fight to be an overcomer”? And the reply was: “I don’t know, but in my heart, I really pray to the Lord that He would keep my heart that it would truly love Him and be for Him”. How true…, “But I still have You and You have me too“, and we have the saints! If any of you think you know the purpose of education, let me know!
